This will be my third year teaching at Schuster Elementary but I bring 15 years of experience. I look forward and I am excited to a new chapter in my career at this campus.
I am a proud graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). I first graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies and again in 2007 with a Master’s in Education, with a specialization in Special Education. My first five years teaching in El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) were in a self contained special education classroom with students in 4th and 5th grade (AIM II). In 2007, our school district started talking about full inclusion for students in a resource setting. I wanted to be a part of it. The next four years I was an inclusion/special education teacher for 4th and 5th grade. Although I had great rapport with the teachers at the campus, I always felt uneasy about entering their classroom during lessons. The last three years of my teaching career have been as a general education teacher with a special education teacher coming into my classroom to service the students with an IEP. I have a different perspective now and a different outlook on how both teachers can work together to better educate all students in the classroom. This school year I will be going back as a special education/inclusion teacher with a better understanding and expectations from both angles.
